Armstrong was last seen in Hernando, Mississippi on December 23, 1977. He borrowed his brother’s white, 2-door 1973 Pontiac LeMans and drove to his high school prom at the National Guard Armory.

Armstrong took his girlfriend home and has not been seen or heard from since. The vehicle he was driving at the time has not been recovered. The car has red and black racing stripes and was displaying a Mississippi license plate reading “DAY 485”.

Family and locals theorize that the Ku Klux Klan may be involved in Armstrong’s disappearance and mistaken him for his older brother, James, who was dating a white woman at the time of Armstrong’s disappearance. Armstrong’s family criticized the manner in which the police handled the case in the beginning. An investigator recently told the family that several valuable documents are missing from Jerry Armstrong’s case file.
