case details:

Loper was last seen in the 200 block of Clarence Bennett Road in Lucedale, Mississippi at approximately 10:00 p.m. on May 29, 2002. Her husband, Jonathan “Carl” Loper, stated that around 4:00 a.m. the next morning the couple’s six-year-old son woke him up because their four-month-old son was crying. Mary was not in the home at the time.

On the day of Mary’s disappearance, she called her mother from the emergency room and told her that Carl had injured her during an argument and dropped her off at the hospital to get stitches. She asked her mother for a ride home from the hospital. Mary also called her sister and told her she was afraid of Carl hurting her but that she needed to go home and get her children.  Her mother, sister, and minister offered to accompany her while she got some belongings and her children; however, Mary refused. She was last seen by her mother when she was dropped off at the home she shared with Carl.

Carl did not report Mary missing. Mary’s mother and sister reported her missing on May 30th after they called to check on her and were told by Carl that she had disappeared. When police went to the home to investigate, they did find blood in the home but believe it could have been from the cut Mary got during the argument the night before she vanished.

They also found marijuana plants during the search and arrested Carl for drug possession. Carl was already out on bond for separate drug possession and assault charges from the year prior when he allegedly shot a man in the face. Carl was incarcerated for a time after Mary’s disappearance but he has since been released. Investigators say that he is not helpful in any way as it relates to Mary’s disappearance.

A search of the area around the couple’s home did not yield any evidence of Mary’s disappearance. Mary had three sons at the time who now live with their grandparents. There is no physical evidence to show foul play was involved but Mary’s family believes that she was the victim of foul play.
