Case Details
Shaw was last seen by family on July 15th, 2009, at the home of his granddaughter in the Michigan City, Mississippi area of Benton County. Shaw had previously owned a trucking company but had retired in recent years and was a farmer. He had a daily routine of feeding his livestock in the mornings and then making his rounds to visit his family and loved ones who lived within a 3-mile radius. He would do the same routine in the evenings and stop back by his granddaughter’s home in the evenings as well.
On July 15th, 2009, Shaw made his morning visit. He had his cell phone and cigarettes in the front pocket of his plaid shirt, where he always kept them. Everything appeared normal that day. When the visit wrapped up and Shaw was leaving, he told his granddaughter that during his morning rounds he was unable to find one of his colts and believed it may have been hung up somewhere. His granddaughter expected him to return that evening around dinner time. They said their goodbyes and Shaw headed home.
Later that afternoon, his granddaughter became concerned when Shaw did not return and failed to answer her phone calls. She felt something was wrong and headed to his home a short distance away. Upon arriving, she found his truck parked at the entrance to his pasture. Shaw was not around the vehicle. She checked his home and was unable to locate him but found his cigarettes and cell phone on his nightstand. Shaw carried both in his front pocket everywhere he went and she knew something was not right. He also carried two wallets on him, one that always contained a large sum of money. Both of those wallets were missing.
Shaw’s home falls in Benton County, Mississippi; however, his pasture crosses over into Hardeman County, Tennessee. His granddaughter attempted to report him missing to Hardeman County but the agency ultimately decided that the case should belong to Benton County since that is where his home was. The family was unable to report Shaw missing. His family, loved ones, volunteers, and a search organization from Tennessee searched a 7-mile radius around Shaw’s home. They found no sign of Shaw during the searches that spanned 7 days.
